Dry skin treatment
Many people, especially the older ones, suffer from dry skin particularly on their lower legs, forearms and elbows. Factors which contribute to dry and cracked skin include:
Inherited factors.
Metabolic factors such as excessive weight loss or an underactive thyroid gland.
Decreasing of natural lubrication as a result of increasing age.
Cool weather, especially when windy or the humidity is low.
Low humidity caused by overheating during the winter
Air conditioning during the summer
Bathing, showering or swimming excessively in strongly chlorinated hot or cold water.
Contact with soap, detergents and solvents.
Frictional irritation and chapping.
Dry skin itches because it is irritated easily. If your skin is very dry and itchy, do and see a doctor.
Dry skin and itching can affect your sleep, cause irritability, or be a symptom of a disease. For example,
diabetes and kidney disease can cause itching. Some medicines make the itchiness worse.
An important aspect of dry skin treatment is to identify and tackle any contributing factors (see the list of causes above).
In order to reduce water loss and soothe the dry skin, the most common treatment is the use of
anti aging moisturizers.
Because of their high water content, they feel cool on the skin and don't leave the skin feeling greasy.
You may need to apply them frequently to relieve the signs and symptoms of dryness. Organic and natural skin moisturizers should be used
indefinitely to prevent recurrence of dry skin.
A humidifier can add moisture to the air. Bathing less often (showers may be better than baths) and using milder soaps also can help relieve dry skin. Warm water is less irritating to dry skin than hot water.
