Elidel and Protopic May Increase Cancer Risk

Elidel is a medicine targeted to treat skin diseases such as mild or moderate eczema (atopic dermatitis).
Its producer is Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. This cream is for use on the skin only and it is not
recommended for children younger than 2 years of age. According to its medication guide, Elidel can be used
on all affected skin areas, including your face and neck, for short or intermittent long periods of treatment.
Protopic Ointment, is a medicine indicated as second-line therapy for the short-term and non-continuous
chronic treatment of moderate to severe eczema. Second-line therapy means that Protopic Ointment is used
in patients who have failed to respond positively to other topical prescription treatments, or when
those treatments cannot be prescribed from various reasons. This cream made by Astellas Pharma, Inc is
also not advisable for children younger than 2 years of age.

both topical eczema drugs, advising of the potential risk for skin cancer associated with their use.
As the agency has received many post marketing reports of skin malignancies and malignant melanoma in
patients using Elidel and Protopic Ointment, this revisions will include a special boxed warning and a
medication guide targeted to emphasize the appropriate use of these drugs to minimize the cancer risk.
